We’re planing our permanent composters and wanted to invite people to participate. The idea is to create some good-looking yet simple composters that will stand the test of time. They need to be sturdy and functional.
Find below a PDF file that can be downloaded. The file contains the proposed design (based on a style that I’ve built before). Also note that they will have lids as well built out of steel mesh to keep them light and to keep rodents and birds out.
Currently the location for the new composters is beside the current composters, but we might also consider a spot near the South side of the shed with easier access from the centre pathway.
Have a look at the current plans and send me your comments. There are two ways – either an email, or post comments on the project page on the website.
Process:
The wood and supplies will be purchased before the harvest party (Oct 4th) and I will cut them to size at my house. At the harvest party, there will be a work-bee for anyone interested to nail the composters together. We’ll also have to level the ground. Bring a cordless screwdriver and any unwanted two by fours or 1x6s (over 4 feet long) that you have lying around (if they are in good shape).
Still, there is more! We’ll be writing some informative signage to attach to the composters that will inform gardeners on what and where to put things, and some educational stuff on how composters work that people walking through the gardens can stop and read about. I’ll draft something shortly, but even better, if there is existing reliable text on this on the web somewhere, let me know.
Stay tuned,
Lowell
